ASHEVILLE CITIZEN TIMES: SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 1993
Letter in response to negative remarks regarding the education of Bill and Hillary Clinton's daughter.

RAISE STANDARDS AND LEARN TO REACH GOALS POSITIVELY:

Editor, the Citizen-Times:
It is difficult to understand the Neanderthal mentality of people who have the audacity to criticize President-elect Bill Clinton's choice concerning his daughter's education.
The reason this man was elected was to help our country, not to be used as a scapegoat by childish, jealous people.  Besides, do we not all aspire to have the best education possible for our children?  If his child has the grades, and the Clinton's can afford the yearly tuition fees, who has the right to condemn their choices to send her to a private school?
As for the poor and middle-class folks wanting the same opportunity for their children--they do have the opportunity through hard work and by making sacrifices.  What has happened to the philosophy that if you really want something you'll find a way to achieve that goal?
Sitting around whining, complaining and wasting precious energy envying what other people have is a useless occupation and a poor example to young people everywhere.
The secret to a better quality of life for more people is not to lower educational standards and give excessively and unconditionally to the poor, but to teach all people to raise their standards and learn to obtain individual goals in a positive manner.

Letter in response to criticism about Bill Clinton

GET PAST GOSSIP, BASE VOTE ON BEST MAN FOR THE COUNTRY NOW

 Editor, the Citizen-Times:
I take exception to the folks who keep insisting that Bill Clinton is not suitable to become President of the United States because he is a womanizer and a draft-dodger.
Intelligent Americans should realize that to expect a mere mortal man to be irreproachable in every area of his life is completely unrealistic, since no such person exists.
As for the draft-dodging criticism,  I consider someone who didn't believe in the Vietnam War, or killing other human beings, to be a strong, well-balanced individual.  It took a lot of courage to express anti-war opinions in the 60's.  And since our government now has confessed that the Vietnam War was not the best political plan, I think Clinton deserves the same respect and consideration as the men and women who did serve in Vietnam.
It takes just as much courage to be an individualist and stand alone as it does to offer one's life in combat.  People need to accept the fact that war is not a goal we all aspire to.  Clinton's choice to continue his college education, as opposed to fighting in a war that he did not believe in, was morally correct.
Amercians need to get past the political gossip and base their voting opinions on what is best for our country now.  We need to concentrate on the damage that has been done to the average working people by the Grand Old Party, and give Clinton a chance to help make life better for all of us who do not fit into the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

GREEN LINE VOLUME VI, NUMBER 8, MAY 1993
Response to a letter regarding interracial marriages

INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE? NO, THANKS!
INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE? NO, THANKS!
Dear Editor:
I read the article in the March issue of Green Line concerning the Baha'i' community, written by Danielle Truscott.  I applaud their positive enthusiasm and agree with many of their philosophies regarding improving race relations.  However, I do not agree that the ultimate path to achieving this goal is by promoting interracial relationships.
The media and the endless parade of "politically correct" sheep would have people believe that we should automatically like or love someone because he or she is a minority--which to me, being a free-thinker, is beyond ridiculous.
I was raised to treat all people--regardless of race, religion or sex, with respect, and I expect the same consideration.  My experience has been that human nature prevents us from guaranteeing that we will be able to tolerate our individual families on a daily basis; therefore, it insults my intelligence to hear people preach that we should automatically and unconditionally respond to someone because of their race.
In promoting true racial equality (not reverse discrimination, which has become so fashionable these days), it is my opinion that the message society should promote is that we treat one another respectfully, which includes accepting (as the rest of nature's animal kingdom does so well) that there is nothing wrong with preferring to couple primarily with people from our individual ethnic cultures.
If one of my children wanted an interracial love relationship, I would respect and support their decision; but given a choice, I would prefer they married within their own race.
I thoroughly resent anyone who would imply that I should feel guilty about my feelings or apologize for them.  I will not be dictated to by the media or a group of minorities.  I do not believe that one person's esteem should be compromised in order to make someone else feel good about themselves.
Let's live and let live all ready!

ASHEVILLE CITIZEN TIMES TUESDAY JANUARY 11, 1994
Response to a letter proposing the banning of handguns

DON'T BAN HANDGUNS; TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO USE THEM!

Editor, the Citizen-Times:

Melvin Hetland advocates banning handguns and anything other than single-shot weapons. (Letters Dec. 1).  In my opinion, Hetland is not in touch with reality.  "What ifs" and assumptions are not the basis to successfully free our world of crime.  One need only to study history to comprehend that ugly truth.
He feels since vast numbers of people commit crimes with guns, no one should own a handgun.  Why not follow that statement up by advocating the banning of cars?  Shouldn't deaths caused by inept people (especially drunken drivers) be considered an equal part of today's problems?  Surely he feels the real problem is the car not the driver.
All folks who would support the banning of handguns should reevaluate their thinking, by understanding the solution to the war on crime is to make our politicians understand they need to not only apprehend criminals, but to punish them accordingly.
Murderers, child-rapists and thieves should not be let back out onto the streets to continue hurting innocent people.  And perhaps if more decent people would purchase handguns, take classes on handgun safety, and be prepared to defend themselves against criminals, then there would be a lot fewer victims.
One more thing:  The first step in Hilter's plan of taking over Europe was the confiscation of guns, and we all know the outcome of that scenario.  Think it over carefully. Advocate getting rid of criminals, not handguns.

Letter regarding presidential debate

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE REVEALS THE TRUTH

After watching the Vice Presidential debate of October 13th, I am convinced more than ever that the only people voting Republican are the rich and the ignorant.
I do not agree with reporters who were impressed with what they call Quayle's combativeness; to the contrary, I found the Vice President's posture to be rude and childish.  Obviously, inferior to Al Gore in every respect; he resorted to the old-time formula of attacking Bill Clinton repeatedly, and refusing to honestly answer questions set forth by him to Mr. Gore.
For Dan Quayle to accuse Governor Bill Clinton of lying, goes beyond being ludicrous, since he and George Bush have proven themselves to be the personification of such practices.
It is time for middle-class, hard-working Americans to receive a tax break. The rich have been catered to long enough.
We are all entitled to have decent, affordable health-care and jobs paying enough to enable us to properly support our families.  To date, Bush and Quayle have no desire to implement this plan, and are deliberately suppressing the middle-class population.
In addition, any one who would consider voting for men who do not respect women enough to emphatically want to grant us our right to make decisions about our bodies, is dangerously foolish.  Such a decision opens the door to allow more personal freedoms to be taken from us all.
As for James Stockdale, his inability to articulate, stand still, and concentrate speaks for itself.
I hope there are enough American's who want to continue living in a Democratic society, who will be voting for Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

THE OUTLOOK - SANTA MONICA, CA  - TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 1997
Letter concerning pollution problem

BUSES, TRUCKS, DIESELS, BIGGEST SMOG PROBLEM

In the June 11th edition of the Outlook, an article on how the region can fight smog captured my attention.
While it is commendable that the California Air Resources Board is contributing $2.8 million to study the problem, let's hope the conclusion of the study isn't geared toward blaming the general population, and then creating more revenue by imposing restrictions on regular vehicles.
In Massachusetts, air conditioning in vehicles is banned under the guise of protecting the ozone.  Here in California, strict smog control through expensive testing is mandatory, yet still has not resolved the problem.
School buses, trucks; diesel vehicles and many businesses are probably most responsible for this growing problem of unbreathable air.  Breathing while a school bus, truck or diesel vehicle is omitting obnoxious fumes makes gasping for breath the norm.
I hope that when the study is finished, this situation is finally noted and resolved.  This is a real problem.  It's time to find the right solutions.

                                                                                  Getting ready for the Emmy's!

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY MARGUERITE A. FAIR, REPORTER FOR WWW.SOCAL.COM AN ONLINE NEWSPAPER:

GETTING READY FOR THE EMMY'S - Monday, September 22, 2003 - By Marguerite A. Fair, Writer/Reporter

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has Los Angeles aglow with preparations for the 55th annual presentation of the Emmy Awards.  Socal.com was given a behind-the-scenes tour of the pre-production process.

Bryce Zabel, Chairman and CEO, John Horowitz, Director and Don Mischer, Executive Producer, welcomed us at the ever-magnificent Shrine Auditorium.  The final presenters for the September 21st spectacular event were announced.  This year the Academy is going for the gold with twelve comic presenters on board.  To name a few, the list includes Mike Myers, Sarah-Jessica Parker and Matthew Perry.

The passing of our beloved and respected John Ritter saddened us all.  John was scheduled to be one of the twelve presenters.  He will be with us in spirit,
and we cherish the warmth of his life, laughter and his special ability to make us laugh.  Dennis Franz of NYPD Blue will present the memorandum portion of the program.

To connect globally, despite the tribulations we have faced these past two years, the Armed Forces Radio and TV will be broadcasting the Emmy Awards to over 170 countries worldwide.

After the briefing for the events was concluded, we watched with anticipation, as the Royal Red Carpet was unrolled onto the scene.  The next delightful process was of course, the arrival of the Golden Emmy Statuettes.

The press tour was moved into the Auditorium area where we were given a sneak preview of the beautiful Architectural Digest Greenroom, which was located backstage.  Designed by Hermes Mallea and Carey Maloney of M (Group), it was more than breathtaking.  From the Old World Weavers Fabrics, to the rare antique carpet and charming art deco artwork, it was obviously a glimpse of the electric beauty at its best.

It was then off to a peek of the divinely transformed restroom, now the Lancome Beauty Lounge where the female Emmy guests will relax and primp in the atmosphere of a specialized beauty salon.

We then moved to the Expo Hall, which will be magically transformed into Club 55 at Coconut Grove for the Governors Ball.

As our tour winded down, we were taken through the inside of the Shrine Auditorium where the crews worked busily to make the 6,300 seat area, a finished home to the Emmy's.  It was truly a marvelous sight, to witness a city being created for the gala annual event.

As the best is usually saved for last, we ended our tour with a special interview with Michelle C. Weese, Vice President of Public Relations and Marylyn Lazo, representatives for Masterfoods, USA.  These ladies represent Ethel M. Chocolates.  Quality is present and accounted for with these fine, handcrafted chocolates.  You will find only natural ingredients in these super-delicious treats.  This reporter can vouch for the ultra delicious taste of these dynamic, mouth-teasing chocolates.  If you'd like to try them for yourself, they can be purchased at Fred Segals in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.  They can also be ordered through their website: www.EthelM.com

All of us at Socal.com would like to congratulate the nominee's for the 2003 Emmy Awards.  Thank you for the entertainment, the joy, and all the laughter you bring into our lives.

Fair 2007 when it was only a small one-act play. In 2010, Kevin Dobson and I partnered to co-write the play and as equal writing partners, turned it into a full stageplay now in pre-production.

MARLENE addresses the audience before the curtain opens.  Red hair, no accent. A full spotlight is on her body.

I rose from a self-imposed nap of four hours.  Woke up slowly and carefully at 5:20 in the afternoon.  First thought? When does the loneliness stop?  A simple question with a time-consuming thought process to answer.  The bland feeling of emptiness comes in waves; mixed with regret and self-doubt.  Those who think they know me well would jolt at that private information.  We humans all feel the burst of singleness from time to time.  Scattered longings of what if's or why did it happen this way?

The self-help books line my shelf, staring at me with tidbits on how to live life better.  I've read them, hell, I've ingested them with gusto; hour after hour.  At times so close to the answer.  Swimming in the positive messages from strangers.  All the PhD's and string of letters after their names do not help me.  Not now.  How do I know that their lives are better than mine?

In a life review, which I masturbate mentally on a steady basis, I try to get to the root.  Why is this occurring now?  This isolated feeling that wakes me in the middle of the night?

The sons who disowned me are men now.  Cozy in their dysfunctional lives.  After years of thought, pain and self-persuasion, finally, I have reconciled within me the loss of motherhood from my life.  That bit of self-healing took only a block of twenty years.  I remember hearing that time is a mere wink of God's eye, but to me it seemed to be an eternity of anguish.  There is no stab of pain so great as the loss of the love and companionship of the children who passed into the world through my rapidly shriveling womb.

Those men who came through me to this life are two men I would lay down my life for, yet all my gestures at reconnecting have been greeted with resentment, anger and rejection.  The self-help books say rise above it.  Let it go and move forward.  After the mere passing of a mortal twenty something year cycle, it's happened.

Still, in honesty on the anniversary of their births and the day that celebrates their connection to me, Mother's Day, the stir of phantom maternal feelings drags me to a temporary sea of ache.  Women who have born children know the ache of which I speak.  Only they would understand the depth of despair that tears at my heart.

A last attempt to touch them.  Spotlight fades.

The End.
